Practical Considerations for Overcoming Bioavailability Challenges with Lipid Based Drug Delivery Systems - Bringing together excipients, formulation and manufacturing expertise.

View on demand

With the increasing number of poorly soluble and poorly permeable new chemical entities (NCEs), bioavailability enhancement is of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. Lipid based drug delivery systems (LBDDS) are currently the most commercially successful technology bringing 50+ poorly soluble NCEs to market. In order to achieve success, functional excipients and formulation expertise play an critical role in LBDDS development.

In this webinar, Dr. Frank Romanski will discuss the importance of functional excipients - with examples starting with simple single-phase formulations and evolving to increasingly complex and multi-phase systems such as emulsions, microemulsions and suspensions.

LBDDS offers a proven development pathway to a versatile softgel dose form. Dr. Derek Bush will discuss the selection, interaction, and synergism of excipients with softgels and recent innovations. Case studies will be presented to demonstrate technical and clinical benefits from lipid formulation and softgel technologies.

Learning Objectives Presentation 1.

  • Importance of excipient selection for the formulation of poorly water soluble drugs.
  • Strategies for excipient selection in complex formulations.
  • Excipient compatibility needs for different dosage forms.

Learning Objectives Presentation 2.

  •  Understand the technical benefits from applying LBDDS and softgel technologies
  •  Demonstrate that softgels are a versatile dosage form for oral delivery of LBDDS
  •  Case studies of recent softgel innovations to overcome bioavailability challenges and beyond
