James Thomson

The Power List 2021 – Advanced Medicine


Investigator, Regenerative Biology at the Morgridge Institute for Research at the University of Wisconsin, Madison

James Thomson is a developmental biologist well known for his pioneering work isolating and culturing human embryonic stem cells in 1998, and developing human pluripotent stem cells from adult skin cells in 2007. In 2004, he founded Cellular Dynamics International to investigate the potential of human-induced pluripotent stem cells for drug discovery and toxicity testing. The company has since been acquired by Fujifilm. Thomson has been the recipient of many prizes and accolades during his career, including the King Faisal International Prize and the Albany Medical Center Prize in 2011.
