President and CEO, Vertex Pharmaceuticals
Reshma joined Vertex in 2017 as Chief Medical Officer and became President and CEO in 2020. Under her leadership, Vertex has continued to build from its long-standing strength in cystic fibrosis while expanding into new areas of serious disease, including gene editing, cell therapy, pain, and kidney disease.
In cell and gene therapy, Reshma has overseen one of the field’s most important recent milestones: the approval and launch of CASGEVY, developed with CRISPR Therapeutics. The therapy was first approved in the UK in November 2023, followed by FDA approval for sickle cell disease in December 2023 and beta thalassemia in January 2024. Vertex is also advancing cell therapy approaches for type 1 diabetes, reflecting the company’s broader strategy of using different modalities to address diseases with high unmet need. A physician by training, Reshma has helped position Vertex as one of the clearest examples of how commercial strength, scientific discipline, and long-term investment can support expansion into advanced medicines.
