Meet Carrie Mason

Carrie leads Lonza’s PAT Center of Excellence within Integrated Biologics R&D, where she focuses on process analytical technologies, automation, and next-generation biomanufacturing. With more than 25 years of industry experience, including 17 years at Lonza, she has worked across purification development, clinical-to-commercial technology transfer, commercial manufacturing support, and intensified and continuous biologics manufacturing.

Carrie also played a central role in the design and launch of Lonza’s Process Innovation Center, completed in 2024, which supports research into novel technologies, automation, and industry-academic collaboration across the New England biotech ecosystem. Her work is moving PAT from a specialist discipline into a practical enabler of more robust, adaptive, and efficient biomanufacturing, supported by real-time analytics, control strategies, faster technology transfer, and more reliable production.

“Advanced PAT should not be considered an add-on, but rather as a critical enabler of the next generation of biomanufacturing. While it may be technically possible to continue operating with legacy approaches, choosing not to adopt new analytical technologies simply because current processes ‘work’ risks stagnation. Ultimately, the question is not whether we can operate without advanced PAT, but whether we can continue to advance without it.”
