Thomas Cech

Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Colorado

Thomas is an Investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and also a Distinguished Professor at the University of Colorado and Director of the university’s BioFrontiers Institute. He shared a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of the catalytic properties of RNA in 1989. Asked what changes he’d like to see in pharma, Thomas says, “We need to see more risk-taking to make the big advances in meeting unmet medical needs, not just me-too incremental improvements.”
